Ruten 流転

The ceaseless turning of wordless time.

gazer

Ruten (Transience) is an installation that invites viewers to quietly reflect on the unnoticed 'flow of time' passing through our daily lives and experience it through the lens of our senses.

In the darkness of the former sake brewery on the grounds of SupernaturalDeluxe, kinetic sculptures created by Shinobu Hashimoto float into view. Their forms sway continuously with quiet energy under the influence of gravity, light programmed by VJ Wasabi, and resonant tones. Each subtle motion intertwines with the viewer’s own memories and emotions, leaving behind an experience that cannot be expressed in words - only felt, quietly, within.

SupernaturalDeluxe

SuperDeluxe was a legendary live venue that presented experimental performances every night in Nishi-Azabu, Tokyo. In 2022 it was reborn as SupernaturalDeluxe - a hybrid laboratory located on a registered tangible cultural property in the heart of Kamogawa City in Chiba Prefecture, where music, art, food, the natural environment, regenerative agriculture, and local community merge into an integrated whole.

Mobile (kinetic sculpture)

Shinobu Hashimoto's kinetic sculptures create a new atmosphere within the distinctive Hiiregura Hall, part of the registered cultural property located on the SupernaturalDeluxe grounds. In the darkness of the former sake brewery, light and shadow intersect, and the sculptures dance quietly, guided by gravity, or accompanied by unpredictable fluctuations.

Their forms are far more than mere decoration - the artwork emanates a presence that transforms the entire space. The pieces respond to wind, human presence, and subtle shifts in air currents, continuously creating ever-changing landscapes. Shadows cast by light spread softly across the walls and floors, and the juxtaposition of trembling darkness and silence sharpens the viewer's perception.

The intersection of analog craftsmanship with an expression that encompasses the space itself transforms the Hiiregura Hall into a stage where each passing moment holds a distinct character. What emerges is Hashimoto's unique world-view, where the unpredictability born from incalculable movement intersects with aesthetic necessity.

Born in 1980 in Sapporo, Hokkaido.

After graduating from university, I traveled around Australia, Europe, and Asia, then moved to Shizuoka Prefecture, where I established my own studio and began my creative work. My artist name is “Shinobu Hashimoto,” and my brand name is “ningulu.”

From gallery exhibitions to solo shows, department store events, and craft markets, his works have been showcased in a wide range of settings.

Mobiles crafted from brass and copper sway gently in the presence of light and wind, subtly altering the flow of time. Embracing the textures of metal and the beauty of its natural patina, they bring a soft, atmospheric presence into the space.

モビールとジュエリー

Exhibition & Sale of Mobiles and Jewelry

Brass and copper are shaped into mobiles that respond softly to wind and light. For this exhibition, mobiles will be shown alongside jewelry fashioned from the same metals, which will also be available for purchase. They invite you to experience their presence—as small sculptures woven into daily life, and as art worn on the body.

Installation Design

The piano sound performed by Shinobu Hashimoto is deconstructed and reassembled through programming, giving rise to new resonances. In response, light and sound devices fill the space, unfolding a spectrum of shifting expressions that evolve with the passage of time.

An Installation to Feel the Passage of Time
Even when the melody seems the same, the spatial arrangement of light and sound is generated anew in each moment, giving rise to entirely different scenes. A system embedded with sensors converts kinetic motion into light, introducing unpredictable fluctuations into the space. These ever-emerging landscapes intertwine with the viewer’s perception, awakening a renewed awareness of the flow of time.

This work employs advanced digital tools—TouchDesigner, Max/MSP, Ableton Live, and Arduino—that underpin generative art, resonating with the organic and poetic presence of Shinobu Hashimoto’s mobiles. Through the intersection of technology and analog craftsmanship, the world of Ruten unfolds—one that transcends formulas and code.

Light, sound, and movement intertwine to create a space in constant transformation. Discover an experience found only here—intellectual, sensorial, and uniquely your own.

VJ Wasabi

VJ Wasabi

In 1999, he spent a year in Australia — an experience that opened the path to traveling the world. Since then, he has journeyed through Turkey, Europe, India, Southeast Asia, the Americas, and Northern Europe, immersing himself in diverse cultures and sensibilities. The landscapes and memories he encountered on those travels continue to flow quietly through his visual works today.

He began his VJ practice in 2010 with Densiyama at Myorenji Temple in Kyoto, and in 2017 collaborated with artist Shinobu Hashimoto to create a light-and-shadow installation for Mingle Village. He has since continued to shape time and space through light and projection in that series of works.

In recent years, he has been integrating AI-generated imagery into his practice, exploring the subtle forms of time within the interplay of light, shadow, and sound. Where memory and technology intersect, his works evoke a sense of the fantastical and the psychedelic — immersive experiences suspended between the real and the imagined.
